The days when a select few countries set the agenda and expected others to follow suit are ended, Jaishankar declared in a statement reiterating India’s fiercely autonomous foreign policy. It is commendable that India has maintained its position despite being targeted by the Five Eyes, an alliance of nations that share intelligence, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK, and the US, in relation to the Nijjar case.
After delivering his speech to the UN, Jaishankar participated in a discussion at the Council on Foreign Relations. He stated that New Delhi has informed Ottawa that it was willing to look at specific and relevant evidence pertaining to the issue. He made it clear that it was not India’s policy to engage in such activities in response to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s claim that operatives of the Indian Government were involved in the murder on June 18.

Only if Canada stops harbouring terrorists while maintaining its moral superiority can collaboration between India and Canada move forward.
