Indiau2019s G20 presidency will focus on forging unity within a disparate grouping to tackle larger global challenges such as indebtedness of countries and climate change at a time of divisions over issues like the Ukraine conflict, people familiar with the matter said on Tuesday.Since the G20 is a consensus-driven organisation and China is now involved in a protracted border confrontation with India, this strategy will necessitate communication with all G20 members, the sources said ahead of the start of the nation’s presidency on December 1.Even though the G20 has a set agenda, India continues to prioritise counterterrorism, and this issue will be discussed at meetings with the grouping’s foreign ministers. Following the global impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and the Ukraine crisis, the G20’s finance track will put an emphasis on ensuring equitable and resilient growth, they stated.
One Earth, One Family, One Future, the theme of India’s G20 presidency, emphasises the significance of having an approach that unites the world to address the future together as well as the importance of meeting the expectations of developing countries with regard to global challenges such as addressing climate change. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the nation’s presidency will be inclusive, ambitious, resolute, and action-oriented while speaking at the G20 Summit’s closing session in Bali. One of the individuals mentioned above stated, At a time when the Global South is expecting the G20 to respond to global challenges, we have to bring about unity, not divisiveness. During our presidency, we will work to achieve a degree of unity that can confront the most difficult and pressing issues, and we will maintain disunity to a minimum level, said the president.

India will work to act as a bridge so that the G20 can address pressing broader concerns including economic growth, country debt, revitalising the momentum to achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs), and climate change. This includes differences between the West and Russia over the situation in Ukraine. Due to the G20’s emphasis on consensus-building, all of its membersu2014including Chinau2014are significant. Every member needs to be involved. China has the second-largest economy in the world, making it important for supply chains. China must be included in any discussion of state debt, the individual asserted. Regarding debt relief, the people referred to the difficulties faced by some of the countries in India’s neighbourhood that were overly dependent on external debt and had gone through a lot of suffering since the pandemic.
India will also work to reform multilateral organisations like the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF), two of the Bretton Woods institutions, whose current missions do not allow them to address today’s issues, such as raising more money from the private sector or providing funding for climate action. The people stated that the schedule for more than 200 meetings before the G20 Summit in September 2023 is still being finalised. They speculated that G20-related meetings may be organised in Kashmir, Ladakh, and Arunachal Pradesh. On December 1, a number of activities will mark India’s beginning of the G20 presidency, including the illumination of 100 monuments across the nation with the G20 logo, a gathering of students from about 75 universities in order to involve youth, called University Connect, messages from prominent figures like S. Jaishankar, the minister of external affairs, and the release of videos and radio jingles.
