Akhilesh Yadav, the leader of the Samajwadi Party, and important figures including Chief Ministers Nitish Kumar, Mamata Banerjee, and MK Stalin indicated that they would be unable to attend the high-level meeting of Indian leaders, therefore the Congress was forced to postpone it.

Sanjay Raut, the leader of the Shiv Sena (the Uddhav Thackeray faction), has ruled out dissension among the opposition parties, saying, “We are together and you will see its result in 2024.”

But the reality on the ground indicates that something is amiss. Not only have the results of the most recent Assembly elections in the Hindi heartland dealt a severe blow to the Congress, but they have also disappointed the 28-party coalition. The ancient party’s dominance in India has been challenged by its crushing defeat in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh.

The fiasco has been dubbed “more of a Congress failure than a BJP success story” by the Trinamool Congress. Concerns have also been voiced over the Congress’s seeming arrogance and its treatment of Indian voters coldly while on the campaign trail.

Tensions had arisen when the Congress refused to reach an agreement on seat-sharing for the Madhya Pradesh elections, and the Samajwadi Party accused the party of betrayal. The task of deciding on the seat-sharing plan for the Lok Sabha elections of 2024 now falls to the opposition.

The inability of INDIA to present itself as a formidable rival to the BJP is hindering its attempts to become a unified and credible leader capable of challenging PM Modi. It will be difficult to maintain unity since different parties will always put their own interests first. Even with his apology, figures like Senthilkumar, the MP for the DMK, are not aiding India’s cause with his careless statements. The BJP is on the rampage, and a motley crew of opportunists has no chance against them. The Opposition has a limited amount of time to prepare for the pivotal legislative elections.
