An Indian-origin neurosurgeon in the U.S., Dr. Rajesh Bindal, has been fined over $2 million for Medicare fraud. The 53-year-old was found guilty of falsely claiming to have performed surgeries involving the implantation of electro-acupuncture devices, procedures that are typically carried out in operating rooms. However, Bindal had instead taped the devices behind patients’ ears, which often fell off within days.

Federal investigators uncovered that these procedures were not only falsely billed but were sometimes carried out by non-surgeons, such as device sales representatives or physician assistants, in an improper clinic setting. Dr. Bindal’s actions, which involved defrauding both Medicare and the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program, have led to a fine of $2,095,946.
