They have decided to renew a security cooperation pact and reopen embassies in each other’s capitals in accordance with the arrangement. The normalisation of ties will only be accomplished in little steps like these. It is uncertain whether this agreement will stand. Yet, this is an important turning point not only for the two countries but also for the restive region.

While lacking China’s economic might, it could have aided normalisation earlier on by holding talks. India should not shy away from its responsibility to help hostile parties normalise their relations.
