Within one week, terrorists have carried out attacks in Reasi, Kathua, and Doda districts, resulting in the deaths of nine civilians and a CRPF jawan. The incident in Reasi involved gunmen opening fire on a bus transporting pilgrims to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine on Sunday, which coincided with the swearing-in ceremony of the new government.

The security situation is concerning and presents a significant challenge to the Modi administration, especially as plans are underway to conduct Assembly elections in the state-turned-UT later this year.

The restoration of J&K’s statehood and the reconsideration of the withdrawal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act have been promised by the Centre. The recently witnessed high voter turnout in Kashmir during the Lok Sabha elections has clearly indicated that the troubled Valley’s people believe in the democratic process. Despite this, there are attempts by terrorists and their supporters to disrupt the progress by resorting to violence.

J&K DGP RR Swain has accused Pakistan of attempting to disrupt peace in the UT through its militants, and he has assured that the country’s security forces will respond fittingly to the aggression. Furthermore, he has cautioned local collaborators of the hostile neighbour against supporting militancy. This support from the local community is encouraging infiltrators from across the border to carry out terror attacks seemingly with ease.

In the midst of these assaults, Ajit Doval gets reappointed as National Security Advisor. He was instrumental in two significant counterterrorism operations: the Balakot airstrikes following the Pulwama suicide bombing in 2019 and the surgical strikes in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir following the Uri assault in 2016. Doval will be required to assist the PM in handling the current circumstance with firmness and power. The entire world will be watching India’s military and diplomatic reaction.
