Amit Shah, the party’s top strategist, made the announcement on the second day of the national executive meeting. Mr. Nadda’s term was set to expire in January of this year when he succeeded Amit Shah as the party’s leader in 2020. However, given that there are nine state elections this year and general elections in 2024, it was anticipated that his term would be prolonged.
JP Nadda’s term as party leader would now continue through June 2024, the BJP national executive unanimously determined, Amit Shah said at a press conference. According to Mr. Shah, the party would have a larger mandate in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections than it did in the 2019 elections under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Nadda.

Leaders of the BJP concur that Mr. Nadda has PM Modi’s support and that his strong performance has allowed the party to decide to extend his term. Today, Mr. Shah emphasised how many state elections the BJP won under Mr. Nadda’s direction. He also expressed optimism that the party would get a larger mandate in 2024 than it did in 2019. He praised Mr. Nadda’s leadership throughout the pandemic and noted how he linked party organisation with public service. Besides, caste equations also work in Mr. Nadda’s favour.
According to sources, a party president may serve two consecutive terms of three years each under the BJP constitution. The process of electing the national president can begin after the organisational elections have taken place in at least 50% of the state units, according to another regulation.
Yesterday, Mr Nadda had underscored that party leaders must ensure victory in all nine state assembly polls slated for this year. PM Modi is expected to outline the political roadmap for the party this evening in the valedictory session of the meeting, which is being attended by the party’s union ministers, state chief ministers and around 350 leaders from across the country.
