Public outcry followed an insensitive comment made by Sheila Dikshit, the chief minister of Delhi at the time, saying that women shouldn’t be so adventurous as to be out on the roadways alone at night. Since March 2009, the convicted individuals have been detained on suspicion of kidnapping, robbing, and murdering Jigisha Ghosh, a young working lady from Delhi. One of them admitted to killing Soumya as well during the Jigisha case inquiry, connecting the two incidents.

They were later proven to have killed Jigisha, and as a result, they were kept behind bars. One of the defendants even filed a motion in the interim, requesting Rs 1 crore in compensation for the excessively long investigation and trial process in the Soumya case, but his petition was denied. Undertrial detention of this kind is a sign of excessive delay in the legal system.
The Soumya case emphasises the importance of addressing the persistent and expanding issue of postponed justice. There are more than five crore cases pending in different Indian courts. These cases affect the lives and livelihoods of crores of people.
