Kangana Ranaut’s upcoming film ‘Emergency’ has sparked significant controversy ahead of its release, with the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) calling for an immediate ban. The SGPC, a prominent Sikh organisation, has accused the film of misrepresenting Sikhs and portraying them in a negative light, leading to widespread calls for its prohibition.

The controversy erupted after the SGPC President, Harjinder Singh Dhami, publicly criticised the film, alleging that it distorts historical facts and disrespects the Sikh community. In a detailed social media post, Dhami expressed his concerns, stating, “The released excerpts from the film suggest a deliberate misrepresentation of Sikhs, portraying them as separatists, which seems part of a deeper conspiracy.” He further criticised the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for approving the film without adequate representation from the Sikh community.

The SGPC’s demands include not only a ban on the film but also the filing of an FIR against Kangana Ranaut for what they describe as “character assassination” of Sikhs. The committee has also called for the inclusion of a Sikh representative on the CBFC to ensure fair assessment of films in the future.

Gyani Raghbir Singh, Jathedar of the Akal Takht, echoed these sentiments, asserting that the film disrespects the Sikh community by allegedly misrepresenting Sikh characters. He emphasised, “The Sikh community cannot forget the atrocities of June 1984, and this film’s portrayal of Jarnail Singh Khalsa Bhindranwale as a separatist is deeply offensive. Ranaut’s repeated provocations against Sikhs have gone unchecked by the authorities”.

Kangana Ranaut, known for her bold and often controversial statements, has yet to respond to these allegations. However, sources close to the actress have indicated that she stands by her work and believes in the film’s portrayal of historical events. ‘Emergency’, which is directed and produced by Ranaut, is a biographical drama centred around the political turmoil during the Emergency period in India from 1975 to 1977.

The film has already generated significant buzz due to its sensitive subject matter and Ranaut’s portrayal of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The inclusion of historical figures and events has made it a topic of intense debate, with various groups expressing their views on its accuracy and representation.

The SGPC’s call for a ban has added to the film’s notoriety, with many in the film industry and beyond watching closely to see how the situation unfolds. The controversy has also sparked discussions about the role of censorship and representation in Indian cinema, highlighting the delicate balance between creative expression and cultural sensitivity.

As the release date approaches, the film’s producers and the CBFC are likely to face increased pressure from various quarters. Whether ‘Emergency’ will see the light of day as planned or face delays and modifications remains to be seen.

For now, the controversy surrounding ‘Emergency’ serves as a reminder of the powerful impact of cinema on society and the responsibilities that come with portraying historical events and figures.
