The much-anticipated release of Kangana Ranaut’s directorial debut, “Emergency,” has been postponed amid a storm of controversy and death threats. The film, which centers on the political turmoil during the Emergency period in India under former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, has sparked outrage among certain groups. The Gurdwara Committee has called for an immediate ban on the film, accusing it of offending Sikh sentiments. The portrayal of sensitive historical events, including the assassination of Indira Gandhi, Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, and the Punjab riots, has been particularly contentious.

Kangana Ranaut took to social media platform X to address the situation, clarifying that the film had not yet received certification from the CBFC. “There have been rumors circulating that my film ‘Emergency’ has been certified by the Censor Board. This is not true,” Ranaut stated in a video. She explained that while the film had initially received clearance, the certification process was delayed due to death threats against CBFC members

The threats against the CBFC members have added a layer of complexity to the already fraught situation. Ranaut revealed that the threats have pressured the board to reconsider the depiction of certain scenes in the film. This has led to further delays as the filmmakers navigate the sensitive content and potential censorship

In an interview, Ranaut expressed her disappointment with the delay, stating, “Meri film pe hi Emergency lag gayi hai. Bahut hi nirashajanak ye sthiti hai. Main toh khair bahut hi zyada disappointed hu apne desh se, aur jo bhi haalaat hain” (An Emergency has been imposed on my film now. It’s a terrible situation. I am very disappointed with our nation and how things are unfolding here).

Despite the setbacks, Ranaut remains hopeful that the film will be released soon. Sources close to the actress have indicated that she is aiming for a new release date within the next 10 days, pending the resolution of the certification issues and security concerns. “Emergency” is not the first film to depict the events of the Emergency period, with previous films like Madhur Bhandarkar’s “Indu Sarkar” and Meghna Gulzar’s “Sam Bahadur” having tackled similar themes without facing such intense scrutiny.

The delay has sparked a wave of reactions from the public and the film industry. Supporters of Ranaut have rallied behind her, condemning the threats and calling for the film’s release. Industry insiders have also voiced their concerns over the increasing instances of censorship and the impact on creative freedom

As the controversy continues to unfold, all eyes are on the CBFC and the filmmakers to see how they navigate this challenging situation. The release of “Emergency” remains highly anticipated, with audiences eager to see Ranaut’s portrayal of one of the most turbulent periods in Indian political history.

The postponement of “Emergency” highlights the ongoing challenges faced by filmmakers in India, particularly when dealing with sensitive historical and political content. As Kangana Ranaut and her team work towards resolving the issues, the film’s eventual release will undoubtedly be a significant moment in Indian cinema.
