The terrible condition of affairs in our nation is summed up by the Karnataka High Court’s agonising inquiry, which it field while taking suo motu cognizance of the horrifying event in which a woman was undressed, paraded through the hamlet (in the Belagavi district), and tied to an electricity pole.

Her fault? Her son had run away with his fiancée, and the girl’s infuriated family resolved to enforce this harsh kind of “immediate justice” by taking matters into their own hands. Regretfully, not even the authorities have done enough to bring the poor woman who was humiliated in public to justice.

The court’s strictures, characterising it as an “extraordinary case” that called for “extraordinary treatment” and “harsh words,” served to highlight this. The police were chastised by the court for their inadequate and ineffective response to the case, and they were ordered to be arrested right away.

In addition, it stipulated that the woman be awarded money while also noting that the women’s commission had not yet intervened to assist her. Regretfully, there are other similar cases. During the ethnic clashes in Manipur earlier this year, women were stripped, raped, and paraded in their underwear; in Delhi, a woman was attacked, tonsured, and paraded; and in Dewas, Madhya Pradesh, a married tribal woman was tortured and paraded by a mob, which included her husband and in-laws, over a suspected extramarital affair.

Efficient and ensured administration of justice can significantly discourage would-be offenders and prevent them from committing cruel crimes against women. Otherwise, “no fear of the law is very, very disturbing,” as the Karnataka High Court stated.
