He said that he doesn’t want to comment more on judicial issues, but it is country need to have new system for appointment of judges. He also took on supreme Court vacations. As cases pending in the courts are nearly 5 crores, courts should stop hearing bail pleas and unnecessary PILs.
u201cAt this point, the government has very limited powers to reduce vacanciesu2026 I donu2019t want to comment much on the courts as it sometimes looks like the government is trying to interfere with the courtu2019s powers. If you look at the provisions of the Constitution, the process of appointments was the right of the government with the consultation of the court. This changed after 1993. We are giving our support to end the pendency of cases, but till we donu2019t set up a new system for appointments, questions on the appointment of judges will keep being raised,u201d he said.Citing concerns over vacancies in court he said u201cDefinitely, there is a feeling among people of India that the long vacation which the courts obtain is not very convenient for justice-seekers. Definitely, as the Law Minister, it is also my bounded obligation and duty to convey the message or sense of this House to the judiciary. Will definitely ensure that even if there are vacations, the functioning of the court should not be stopped.u201dWhat do you think, is Indian government right over collegium system? Or government is interfering in judicial powers?
