The light tank, which is expected to weigh around 25 tonnes, will be designed and built by L&T’s defense arm, L&T Defence. It will be equipped with advanced features such as a high-powered gun, sophisticated sensors, and enhanced mobility capabilities, which will enable it to operate effectively in the rugged terrain of the Sino-India border.

Speaking about the project, JD Patil, Senior Executive Vice President and Whole-time Director (Defence), L&T, said, We are proud to have been selected by the Indian Ministry of Defence to develop the prototype of the light tank for deployment along the Sino-India border. This is a testament to our engineering capabilities and our commitment to supporting India’s defense sector.
He further added, The light tank will be designed and built indigenously, utilizing advanced technologies and materials. We are confident that it will meet the stringent requirements of the Indian Army and play a critical role in enhancing India’s defense capabilities along the border with China.

L&T has a long-standing relationship with the Indian Armed Forces and has been involved in the development of various defense projects, including submarines, warships, and armored vehicles. The company has a dedicated defense manufacturing facility in Hazira, Gujarat, which is equipped with state-of-the-art machinery and equipment.
The development of the prototype is expected to be completed within a year, after which it will undergo extensive testing and evaluation before being deployed along the Sino-India border.
