Lalu Prasad Yadav recently shared his reflections on the “dark days” of the Emergency imposed in India from 1975 to 1977. He described the period as a pivotal time in his political life. During the Emergency, which was declared by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, many political leaders, including Lalu, were imprisoned under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA). This draconian period saw widespread suppression of civil liberties and political dissent.

Lalu recounted his own experience of being jailed and highlighted how this era galvanized him and others in the opposition against authoritarian rule. He also revealed a personal touch, sharing that his daughter, Misa Bharti, was named after the controversial MISA law under which he was detained.
