Messi recently set another record two days after winning the FIFA World Cup 2022 Argentina, as a carousel of photographs commemorating the triumph surpassed all other Instagram posts in terms of likes. The previous most-liked Instagram post received nearly 56 million likes and was an image of an egg.
Chris Godfrey shared the egg photo as a social experiment in January 2019. It has been surpassed by Messi’s post of joy after winning the World Cup. According to the Olympics website, the Argentine football legend’s photo was also the fastest to reach 50 million likes on social media.
It was the most popular Instagram post by an athlete as of Monday, with nearly 40 million likes. Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have the most liked Instagram posts. Messi or Ronaldo are featured in seven of the top nine Instagram posts. All seven posts were uploaded between 2021 and 2022.
