Parliament Stalemate: Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha Adjourned Amid Adani Row

The winter session of Parliament saw its third day marred by disruptions as the INDIA bloc continued its protests over the Adani Group controversy. Both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned for the day on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, as opposition members raised slogans and demanded a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the allegations against the conglomerate.

The opposition’s demand for a JPC probe intensified following a recent indictment in a US court, which alleged that the Adani Group bribed officials to secure power contracts. The INDIA bloc, comprising several opposition parties, has been persistently raising this issue in Parliament, accusing the government of shielding the Adani Group.

The government, however, has maintained its stance, rejecting the opposition’s demands and asserting that there is no need for a JPC probe. The government has also defended the Adani Group, stating that the allegations are baseless and politically motivated.

The ongoing standoff between the government and the opposition has led to a complete washout of parliamentary proceedings on multiple occasions. The disruptions have hindered the government’s legislative agenda and prevented important discussions on crucial issues facing the nation.

As the winter session progresses, it remains to be seen whether the government and the opposition can find common ground and allow for meaningful parliamentary debates. The future of the session hinges on whether the two sides can bridge the divide and prioritize the interests of the nation.
