Within the last two weeks, the Indian cricket team’s stock has plummeted at an alarming rate, causing fans to panic. The humiliating defeats suffered by India have divided fans on social media. While some blame Rohit’s poor captaincy for the defeat, others blame the rest of the team for crumbling under pressure.
Since last night’s defeat, many fans have taken to Twitter to demand Rohit’s dismissal and Kohli’s reinstatement as the team’s leader, among other positive changes. Kohli supporters pointed out the double standard in judging Rohit and his predecessor. Despite top-scoring for the team, Kohli was blamed solely for the team’s loss to Pakistan in the 2021 T20 World Cup.
When the same thing happened under Rohit’s command, the blame was placed squarely on his teammates Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant, and others. The irate fans even pointed out flaws in Rohit’s treatment of his teammates. Supporters argued that a ‘arrogant’ player like him shouldn’t lead the Indian team, sharing images of him turning his back on young Arshdeep Singh in the final over.
The outrage is understandable. Fans must understand, however, that in cricket, a captain is only as good as his team. It is not just Rohit who has failed; the entire team has failed to deliver.
Fans can say whatever they want, but everyone knows that Rohit is our best bet heading into the T20 World Cup.
Let’s not get too worked up just yet!
