India’s fourth-place finish is the nation’s greatest result in 60 years. The previous-highest placing was third, achieved by India in 1962. The march toward a century is significant in more ways than one. The athletes’ readiness, assurance, and self-assurance on display bode well for India’s sporting aspirations.

    The decision has been supported by the unprecedented number of women who have won gold and podium finishes in events where India has had little to no representation. It would be wise to consider the shortcomings in the midst of the success.
