At least 18 people were slain by one of these gunmen on Wednesday in Lewiston, Maine, at a restaurant and a bowling alley. Robert Card, a qualified firearms instructor and US Army Reserve member, has been identified as the suspect. Earlier this year, after spending two weeks in a mental health hospital, he allegedly started hearing voices and made threats to shoot up a military base.

    The unfortunate status of gun regulations in that nation is summed up by the fact that a mentally ill American with violent tendencies was on the loose, and that he was carrying a pistol as well. 
    The US has a history of failing to defend the lives of its citizens when they are on US soil. According to the non-profit Gun Violence Archive, there have been over 560 mass shootings in the US this year where four or more individuals were shot.

    There were up to 647 mass shootings in 2022. But the infrequent outcry hasn’t been strong enough to change the influential American gun lobby or make gun restrictions more stringent. US President Joe Biden had pleaded vehemently to oppose the gun lobby following two such occurrences in May of last year, but the massacre in Maine demonstrates that America has no real desire to clean up its own mess or learn from its past.
