The new line, which is expected to reduce commuting time between Kolkata and Howrah by up to an hour, will be a major boost for the region’s transportation infrastructure. It is also expected to alleviate congestion on the city’s roads and improve air quality by encouraging more people to use public transport.
The project, which was started in 2008, faced several delays due to technical and financial issues. However, the successful completion of the underwater tunnel marks a major milestone for the project and is expected to open up new possibilities for the development of metro networks in other parts of the country.
Officials from the Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation, which oversaw the project, hailed the achievement as a historic moment for India’s transportation sector. They also expressed hope that the new line would help promote sustainable and efficient transportation options in the region for years to come.
