According to Entertainment Weekly, Miguel Sapochnik, who joined HBO’s freshman fantasy drama House of the Dragon as co-showrunner, has now resigned, leaving House of the Dragon co-creator Ryan Condal as the only showrunner. Sapochnik was known for directing some of Game of Thrones’ most cherished episodes, including Hardhome and Battle of the Bastards.
The Game of Thrones veteran also directed three episodes of House of the Dragon, including the series opener. According to the source, Sapochnik needed a break after working on the Thrones series for so long. He will remain an executive producer on HOTD.
Working inside the Thrones world for the last three years has been an honour and a privilege, Sapochnik said in a statement. Especially spending the last two with the incredible cast and crew of House of the Dragon. I am extremely happy of what we did with Season 1 and thrilled by our audience’ passionate response. It was really difficult to make the decision to leave, but I know it is the best decision for me, both emotionally and professionally.
As Sapochnik departs, another Thrones veteran, Emmy winner Alan Taylor, who directed seven episodes of Game of Thrones, will join House of the Dragon as executive producer and director for a few episodes in Season 2. It’s a delight and an honour to be back at HBO, immersed in the world of the Targaryens, Taylor said. I look forward to working closely with Ryan as House of the Dragon enters its second season.
