His release became significant as a result given the calls from numerous organisations for the reinstatement of J&K’s democratic system and the staging of Assembly elections.     This procedure has been put on hold. Mirwaiz had been arrested the day before, along with important political figures and hundreds of separatists, and the strict Public Safety Act had forced the suspension of Internet access.
    Notably, Mehbooba Mufti, the head of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as well as former Chief Minister and current MP Farooq Abdullah, were both released from prison in 2020. In both instances, there was reason to believe that their release would open the door to the continuation of the election process in Jammu and Kashmir.

    Others, including politicians, are still being held in custody, though. They must be released as well. Even though it was unable to provide a timeline for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, the Solicitor General last month assured the Supreme Court, which was hearing petitions challenging the repeal of Article 370, that the Centre was prepared to hold elections in J&K any time now.
