For the family of the Mirwaiz, their capture by the J&K police’s Special Investigation Agency provides closure. Abdullah Bangroo and Rehman Shigan, two other defendants, were slain in confrontations in the 1990s; Ayub Dar, their collaborator, is currently receiving a life sentence after being found guilty by a TADA court.

The leader of the Jamia Masjid in Srinagar, Mirwaiz Moulvi Farooq, had a significant amount of power. His murder had sparked a commotion. During his funeral procession, security personnel opened fire, killing dozens of bystanders. This caused the then-J&K governor, Jagmohan, to resign.
At the time, Umar Farooq, who was just 17 years old, took over as Mirwaiz and became the leader of his father’s socio political group, Awami Action Committee. Every year on the anniversary of his father’s passing, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq asks for a hartal and is well-received by the villagers. Significantly, Abdul Gani Lone, the head of the Hurriyat Conference, was murdered by gunmen during a gathering on May 21, 2002.
