In the 60-member House, the BJP secured 46 seats. The Congress was demoted to the pitiful fifth position, with only one seat. The latest initiatives in Arunachal that have been started or finished are a part of a long-term effort to oppose China’s aggressive village development strategy along the Line of Actual Control.
PM Modi dedicated the Sela tunnel to the country in March. The goal of this border infrastructure project is to enable faster military movement by linking Guwahati to the vital Tawang area throughout the year.

In December 2022, fighting broke out between Indian and Chinese soldiers in Tawang’s Yangtse district. But in the Sikkim Assembly polls, the saffron party—which has been gaining ground quickly in the Northeast—was soundly defeated. Despite having 12 members in the outgoing House, the BJP was unable to secure any seats.
In the 2019 Assembly elections, the party did not fare well either, but it did manage to capture ten MLAs from the Sikkim Democratic Front and win two by-elections in coalition with the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM). It paid a heavy price for its choice to split from the SKM and go it alone. The Congress could not open its account in Sikkim, just as it could not in Arunachal.

In the northeastern states, the grand old party has been witnessing a helpless decline in its fortunes. Exit polls indicate that the BJP and its allies are predicted to win most of the Lok Sabha seats in these states. There will be close observation of the results in Manipur, a BJP-ruled state that has endured ethnic conflict for the past year. It remains to be seen if the egregious crisis management by the “double-engine” government would prove to be the decisive element in the outcome.
