Brendon McCullum, the former New Zealand cricketer and current head coach of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), has said that it is naive to think that players will turn down big money offers from T20 leagues to play for their country.McCullum’s comments come in the wake of several high-profile players opting to skip international matches in order to participate in lucrative T20 leagues such as the IPL and the Hundred. The trend has raised concerns among cricket administrators, who fear that the importance of international cricket may be diminishing.
Speaking to the media, McCullum said, We’ve got to be careful that we don’t become too naive and think that players are going to turn down big money contracts to play for their country. He went on to say that it is up to cricket boards and administrators to strike a balance between international and domestic cricket and find a way to make international cricket more attractive for players.
McCullum’s comments are likely to spark further debate about the future of international cricket and the role of T20 leagues in the sport. While T20 leagues have brought in huge sums of money and increased the popularity of the sport, there are concerns that they may be taking away from the traditional form of the game and harming the long-term health of international cricket.
