The US and its partners have said that they will continue to support Ukraine “on its irreversible path to full Euro-Atlantic integration, including NATO membership,” and that they plan to deliver a minimum baseline budget of 40 billion euros in military aid within the next year. Included in the statement made on Wednesday during the NATO summit in Washington is the vow.
The war in Ukraine, which started in February 2022 and has claimed thousands of civilian lives, is clearly being prolonged by the Western alliance without hesitation. The catalyst for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of his neighbour was the campaign for Ukraine to join NATO.

Nobody can fail to notice the irony: NATO is taking a sanctimonious stance by blaming Russia alone for starting the war. In an effort to confront the “growing threat” that Russia poses to Europe, the US has announced that it will begin installing longer-range missiles in Germany in 2026, coinciding with mounting internal pressure on President Joe Biden to withdraw his candidacy for reelection.
This demonstrates the West’s reluctance to engage Russia in negotiations, a stark reality made evident by Moscow’s decision to skip last month’s Ukraine peace meeting, which was sponsored by Switzerland.

Not to be outdone, the US-led NATO has denounced China as a “decisive enabler” of Russia’s war in Ukraine. Beijing has responded forcefully, asking NATO to “ask questions about the underlying causes of the crisis and implement practical steps to de-escalate rather than assign blame.” In fact, NATO would be prudent to reflect and refrain from using aggressive language; failing to do so might exacerbate the situation in eastern Europe and push the globe toward a terrible conflict.
