Neeraj Chopra, India’s Olympic gold-medallist javelin thrower, has announced his withdrawal from the upcoming Ostrava Golden Spike 2024 athletics meet, scheduled to take place in the Czech Republic on 28 May. Chopra cited a muscle injury sustained during a training session as the reason for his decision.

In a message on social media platform X, Chopra explained, “Hello everyone! Following a recent throwing session, I decided not to compete in Ostrava as I felt something in my adductor. I have had problems with it in the past and pushing it at this stage can lead to injury.”

Chopra emphasized that he is not currently injured but prefers to avoid any risk in an Olympic year. “Just to clarify, I am not injured but I don’t want to take any risk during the Olympic year so had to take the decision. Once I feel it’s fully recovered, I will get back to competitions. Thank you for your support,” he added
The Ostrava Golden Spike organizers confirmed Chopra’s withdrawal and mentioned he would attend the event as a guest. They announced that European champion Julian Weber from Germany, who recently threw 88.37 meters, will replace Chopra in the competition.
This season, Chopra has participated in two significant events. He secured a silver medal at the Doha Diamond League on 10 May with a throw of 88.36 meters and won the gold at the Federation Cup in Bhubaneswar on 15 May with a throw of 82.27 metres.
India holds high expectations for Chopra in the upcoming Paris Olympic Games, hoping he will defend his gold medal from the Tokyo Olympics
