The project, worth Rs 214 crore, must be finished in two years, and it will be handled by the Border Roads Organization, an agency of the Ministry of Defense. When finished, the airfield’s fighter jet runway, which will be paved, will be usable by all IAF fighter jets.

The task of improving the IAF’s combat preparedness along the border has become more urgent as a result of China’s aggressive building of airfields along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) since 2020. The Chinese had built runways and hangars for combat jets, according to an examination of satellite pictures of the airfields at Ngari Gunsa, Hotan, and Lhasa earlier this year.
Their practice appeared to be intended to increase offensive capabilities and speed up force deployment.India cannot afford to lag behind the rest of the world. It is essential to have a strong air defense system along the LAC. Chinese drones had been flying aggressively towards Indian positions prior to a battle between Indian and Chinese troops in the Yangtse region near Tawang (Arunachal Pradesh) in December of last year.

The IAF was compelled by this to rapidly scramble its fighter jets that were stationed in the area. The IAF’s degree of readiness is anticipated to increase by many notches with the conversion of the Nyoma advanced landing field into an airbase for performing fighter aircraft missions. Another positive development is the renovation of West Bengal’s Bagdogra and Barrackpore airfields, which cost more than Rs 500 crore.
