Alongside the enormous international support for Palestine, a plea was made to the UN Security Council (UNSC) to provide favourable consideration to the country’s request for full statehood.

Palestine will have increased rights at the UN with this decision, but it will not be able to vote or run for office in UN organ elections. The Palestinian state will no longer be marginalised as of September 10, when the UNGA convenes for its next session. It has the ability to co-sponsor ideas and amendments and will be seated alphabetically with other member nations.

Additionally, Palestinian delegates may be chosen to serve as officers in the UNGA’s Main and Plenary Committees. Although this action has great symbolic significance, it does not end the Palestinian people’s protracted suffering. A cease-fire in Gaza, a significant increase in humanitarian aid, and the safe release of Israeli hostages are all urgently needed.

There should be a truce in place before Palestine is granted full membership. The support offered by 143 nations was not compromised by the nine countries—led by the United States—that said “no” and the 25 that abstained. The fallout from the region’s ongoing conflicts cannot be afforded by the world, particularly by the Global South. The US was the sole country to oppose a UNSC resolution last month that called for Palestine to become a state. America should check its internal winds as well, given the unrest on its college campuses.
