Team India appeared to be in good shape prior to the Asia Cup. However, after being humiliated in the Super Four stage of the recently concluded tournament, the Men in Blue have more questions than answers.
The Indian players have six more Twenty20 Internationals to prepare for the T20 World Cup, three against Australia and three against South Africa. Apart from the shorter format, Team India will play three 50-over games against South Africa.
These nine matches against top nations could have helped India tighten its grip ahead of the main event. Following the disappointment of the Asia Cup, fans are hoping that the selectors will select a full-strength team for each and every match in the future.
The selectors have decided to rest the players who will compete in the T20 World Cup for the upcoming ODI series against the Proteas. In the absence of senior players, veteran opener Shikhar Dhawan is expected to lead the side in the ODI series later this month.
After long absences, the majority of the senior players returned to the Indian team for the Asia Cup. While some players, such as Virat Kohli, appeared to be in great form, others appeared to be quite rusty.
With only a few weeks until the T20 World Cup, it would have been preferable if, rather than resting them, the World Cup-bound stars were asked to perform well in the home series and become accustomed to their specific roles.
Obviously, the majority of fans chastised the players for taking breaks between series. Rohit Sharma, as captain, bore the brunt of the wrath of the fans.
Prior to the Asia Cup, India’s first-team players did not play many games together because they were mostly rested. It resulted in a lack of cohesion within the unit, which many believe was one of the primary reasons Team India appeared disjointed at the continental event.
We must not forget that cricket is a team sport, and it is critical for players to perform well as a unit, especially ahead of a major tournament like the World Cup.
What can we expect from Indian Cricket Team in T20 World Cup?
