His message is quite clear: the nation’s progress and the state that became UT will go hand in hand. Initiating and dedicating more than 50 projects worth Rs 6,400 crore to the country, he worked on projects related to tourism and the integrated development of Srinagar’s Hazratbal shrine.
The Prime Minister claimed that with the 2019 abrogation, J&K is “breathing freely” and reaching new heights of growth. The Union Government and the security services deserve credit for the notable decline in the number of terror-related incidents in recent years.

The yearly death toll has also been declining, for both security forces and civilians. After the February 2019 attack on Pulwama, there hasn’t been another significant terror attack in Kashmir. To try and keep young people away from the dangerous paths of extremism and violence, the government has placed a high priority on employment and growth.
The two main tasks facing the Centre in the midst of all these attempts to instil confidence are the staging of the Assembly elections and the restoration of J&K’s sovereignty. The indication that something is wrong on the ground is being sent by the excessive delay in carrying out these crucial exercises.

The government’s assertion that all is well in J&K is refuted by this. Restoring the confidence of political parties and people requires the immediate restart of the election process. Destroying democracy in an area where cross-border terrorism is a major threat is a sure fire way to end badly. Prompt corrective action is required to address the simmering dissatisfaction over perceived disempowerment after statehood and special status were revoked.
