When Project Tiger was started in 1973, the country’s tiger population was on the verge of extinction. Today, it is estimated to be over 3,000, making up more than 70% of the world’s wild tiger population, and there are signs that this number will continue to grow.
Source: India TodayThe fact that the population has doubled in the past 12 years, four years ahead of schedule (TX2 St. Petersburg’s statement on tiger conservation for doubling the tiger population by 2022) further demonstrates the programme’s success. India has demonstrated its dedication to conservation and determination to protect its national heritage by increasing the number of tiger reserves from 9 to 54 in 18 tiger states, covering an area of 75000 sq km as opposed to 18278 sq km in nine states at the commencement of the project.
Another significant difficulty is protecting tigers outside of protected areas, where 29% of them are found. The suggested strategy to manage the environment and the corridors will go a long way towards resolving the aforementioned problems. The ever-increasing problems to conservation that managers are projected to encounter as a result of the ongoing rise in the tiger population would be considerably increased by a robust multi-stakeholder collaborative planning strategy. Unchecked tourism in and near tiger areas is a significant issue that requires efficient management.
The controlling part needs development. The front-line personnel frequently experience hardships and low morale as a result of delayed paychecks and salaries. Other important governance areas that require attention are the training of staff members, notably in intelligence collection, the provision of weapons and other modern basic technical instruments, and the correct investigation of suspected tiger death instances.
Source: Narendra Modi With a large financial contribution (on the order of about $50 million) towards tiger conservation, including the relocation of people, India is an active member in international tiger conservation programs, including the Global Tiger Initiative of the World Bank and Global Tiger Forum. It is necessary to strengthen this international cooperation.
