A team from the Sinhagad Road police station detained the driver and cleaner of the truck that struck more than 40 vehicles on the Navale Bridge late on Monday night. Senior Inspector Shailesh Sankhe, in charge of the Sinhagad Road police station, reported that both were taken into custody in the Nanekarwadi neighbourhood of Chakan. The Narhe Bridge catastrophe did not result in any fatalities, but it did leave about 13 people injured, including two who suffered severe injuries. The truck that crashed into several other vehicles on Pune’s Navale Bridge on Sunday night didn’t have a brake failure, according to an investigation into the fatal collision, the police said after receiving a report from Regional Transport Office (RTO) officials on Monday morning. Instead, the driver had turned off the ignition to conserve fuel, they added.
The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has initiated a large effort to clear encroachments on the sides of the highway and service roads two days after Sunday night’s disaster on Navale Bridge on the Mumbai-Bangalore Highway near Pune, according to officials. Heavy police presence is present during the trip since officials are expecting aggressive responses from locals. The campaign comes after top police, municipal, and NHAI officials from Pune made site visits and held talks near accident hotspots. The inspectors examined the Navale bridge and the nearby selfie spot before proposing a variety of improvements to the safety of the Katraj and Narhe bypass, which has a history of several accidents and fatalities.
According to data from the Pune Police, 108 accidents on two neighbouring stretches of the Navale Road have resulted in at least 31 fatalities since 2018.
