Anderson fell to second place following England’s stunning defeat to New Zealand in the Wellington Test. The 36-year-old Ashwin first claimed the top honour among Test bowlers in 2015, and has returned to the top spot on several occasions since then.
In India’s win in Dehli, Ashwin took two big wickets, dismissing Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith in the same over of the first innings before returning to dismiss Alex Carey for a duck. In the second innings, the off-spinner picked up three of the top five batters, while his spin-bowling partner Ravindra Jadeja rattled through the rest of Australia’s batters.
In the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Ashwin has an opportunity to extend his current reign as No. 1 in India’s remaining two Tests on home soil. After Anderson replaced Australia captain Pat Cummins at the top last time, Ashwin is the third No.1 Test bowler in as many weeks.
In the most recent rankings, the trio remains the top three bowlers. Anderson is now five points behind Ashwin, who still has 864 points.
Jadeja’s 10 wickets in the second Test against Australia move him up to eighth in the bowling rankings. Jadeja and Ashwin are the top two in the Test All-Rounder Rankings.
