Rahul has been involved in politics for the previous twenty years or so, but this is his first constitutional role. The fact that the Congress, the single largest opposition party, has been appointed to this position after a ten-year break is also significant. This is a result of the party’s strong showing in the most recent Lok Sabha elections, which followed two disastrous elections in 2014 and 2019.

Rahul had quit as the president of the Congress soon after the defeat in 2019. He has been hesitant to accept any party positions after then. It can now be definitively said that he was not eager to take on the role of the LoP.

Rahul is being tipped by a resurgent Opposition to lead the charge against the BJP-led NDA government both within and outside of Parliament. He stated in his inaugural statement as the Leader of the Opposition that while the government held political authority, the Opposition also spoke for the people of India.

Rahul wished for the Opposition to be permitted to speak in the House while congratulating Om Birla on his reelection as Speaker of the Lok Sabha.Rahul promised the whole Opposition would support the Speaker in the smooth operation of the House; now it will be his job to keep his word.

The Nehru-Gandhi scion must take advantage of every chance to put pressure on the government on controversial matters like the Citizenship Amendment Act, the National Register of Citizens, and the Agnipath program, now that the BJP is no longer the dominant force in the Lower House. A lot is riding on him to make sure the Opposition doesn’t stage walkouts at the drop of a hat and instead participates in productive dialogue with the government.
