The Indian Railways has formed a panel to investigate the lapses identified by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) in the construction of the new Pamban Bridge. The CRS, in his letter to Southern Railway, highlighted several issues with the bridge, including non-RDSO standard lift span girder and deviations from codal provisions.

The new Pamban Bridge, which is 2.07 km long, is a vertical lift sea bridge that will connect the town of Mandapam in mainland India with Rameswaram on Pamban Island. It is expected to be opened for traffic by the end of 2024.
The CRS’s observations have raised concerns about the safety of the bridge. The panel’s findings will be crucial in determining whether the bridge can be opened for traffic as planned.
