Mumbai Indians’ skipper Rohit Sharma has given a blunt explanation for why he dropped himself down in the batting order during their Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Saturday. Sharma’s move has raised several questions from fans and cricket experts, as he is known for his explosive batting at the top of the order.
After the match, which Mumbai Indians lost by 20 runs, Sharma spoke to reporters about his decision to bat at No. 4 instead of opening the innings. He said, It was a team decision. We wanted to try something different and see how it goes. Sometimes, it works, sometimes it doesn’t. That’s how it is.
Sharma, who has been struggling with his form this season, made just nine runs off eight balls before being dismissed by CSK’s Lungi Ngidi. His move to bat lower down the order also meant that the team’s regular opener, Quinton de Kock, batted at the top with Suryakumar Yadav.
Fans on social media were quick to criticize Sharma’s decision, with many questioning why the team’s most successful opener was being moved down the order. Some even suggested that Sharma’s decision may have been influenced by his poor form in recent matches.
Despite the loss, Sharma defended his decision, saying that the team needed to try different things to get back to winning ways. He added, We need to look at the bigger picture. We have five more games to go and we need to win all of them. We have to try different things and see what works for us.
Mumbai Indians, who are the defending champions, have had a mixed season so far, winning four out of their nine matches. They currently sit in fifth place on the IPL points table and will need to win their remaining matches to have a chance of making it to the playoffs
