Russiau2019s invasion of Ukraine has triggered the most deadly European conflict since World War 2 and the biggest confrontation between Moscow and the West since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.
The comments from the Russian leader follow intense Russian shelling on the Ukrainian city of Kherson on Christmas Eve that killed at least 10 people and injured more than 50 others.
Ukrainian President Zelensky denounced Russia as u201cabsolute evilu201d on Saturday following the deadly strikes, which he said were for u201cthe sake of intimidation and pleasure.u201dPutin said Russia was acting in the right direction in Ukraine because the West, led by the United States, was trying to cleave Russia apart. I believe that we are acting in the right direction, we are defending our national interests, the interests of our citizens, our people. And we have no other choice but to protect our citizens, Putin said.Putin said the West had begun the conflict in 2014 by toppling a pro-Russian Ukrainian president in the Maidan evolution protests.
