Indian badminton star Saina Nehwal has announced that she will be skipping the Asian Games trials due to fitness issues. The trials are scheduled to be held in June 2023.
Saina, who is a former world number one and an Olympic bronze medallist, has been struggling with her fitness for some time now. She had to withdraw from the recently-concluded All England Open due to a groin injury.
In a statement, Saina said that she is working on regaining her fitness and is hopeful of returning to full fitness soon. She also added that skipping the trials was a tough decision for her, but she had to do what was best for her health.
The Asian Games are scheduled to be held in Hangzhou, China in September 2023. Saina had won a bronze medal in the women’s singles event at the 2014 Asian Games held in Incheon, South Korea.
Saina’s absence from the trials is likely to be a blow to the Indian badminton team’s chances at the Asian Games. However, the team still has a strong contingent of players who will be vying for medals at the event.
