Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has voiced his opinion on India’s bowling lineup for the third Test against Australia at the Gabba, suggesting that Akash Deep should be included as the fourth seamer instead of Harshit Rana. This comes after India’s crushing 10-wicket defeat to Australia in the second Test in Adelaide, which has put their World Test Championship (WTC) final qualification hopes in jeopardy1.

Manjrekar believes that Akash Deep’s inclusion could provide much-needed support to the bowling attack, especially if the Gabba pitch offers more assistance to pacers. “Not at the expense of Harshit Rana. But, I think that might happen1. Just trying to read the team management’s mind, but if it’s an all-out pace pitch, he (Akash Deep) can be the fourth seamer. So India have to think about that carefully,” Manjrekar told ESPNcricinfo1.

India’s over-reliance on Jasprit Bumrah has been a point of concern, with Bumrah being the leading wicket-taker in the series so far. In the second Test, Bumrah claimed four wickets, including three top-order batters, while Mohammed Siraj also picked up four wickets1. However, Harshit Rana struggled, conceding 86 runs in his 16 overs without taking a wicket.

Manjrekar highlighted that Akash Deep has shown promise since his Test debut earlier this year, performing well in series against England, Bangladesh, and New Zealand. “This bowling lineup with Bumrah, Siraj, Harshit Rana or Akash Deep is starting to look a little inadequate, if the pitch is going to be as flat as it was in Adelaide in Brisbane1. Otherwise, it should be enough,” he added.

The Gabba pitch is known for its lively nature, which could favor Akash Deep’s pace and ability to extract bounce. Manjrekar’s suggestion comes at a crucial time as India aims to bounce back from their Adelaide defeat and secure a win in the third Test to keep their WTC final hopes alive1.

India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, faces a tough decision heading into the Gabba Test, balancing the need for experience and fresh options in the lineup. The series is currently tied at 1-1, and the winner of the third Test will gain a significant boost in confidence heading into future matches1.

As the Indian team gears up for the decisive match, all eyes will be on the bowling lineup and whether Manjrekar’s suggestion will be taken into consideration. With the support of cricketing legends like Manjrekar, the team hopes to deliver a strong performance and reclaim momentum in the fiercely contested series.
