A month and a half after altercations started during a protest march opposing the Meiteis’ desire for Scheduled Tribe recognition, there has still been no decrease in violence.
The Ministry of Home Affairs established the governor-led peace committee to enable negotiations between diverse ethnic groups, but it has already encountered difficulties. A well-known Meitei civil society group has declined to join the panel, while Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s membership has drawn criticism from the top Kuki authority. The panel’s makeup has to be quickly reviewed by the Centre, and any necessary adjustments must be agreed upon by all parties. The violent organisations that are taking advantage of the tense circumstances must be crushed by the double-engine administration.
A climate that is suitable for discussions must first be created by disarming extremists. To address the twin issues of narco-terrorism and illegal immigration, a long-term plan must be created. Above all, real efforts are required to close the trust gap within communities as well as between the opposing factions and the ruling class.
