The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has recently targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the implementation and effectiveness of the Ayushman Bharat scheme, branding it as a “scam” and alleging it falls short of truly benefiting India’s underserved populations. The Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), launched by the Modi government in 2018, aims to provide health insurance coverage to economically vulnerable families, offering free treatment in hospitals across India. However, AAP contends that the scheme’s impact has been minimal, with numerous cases where beneficiaries have struggled to access quality healthcare services.

According to AAP leaders, Ayushman Bharat has not lived up to its promises due to a combination of bureaucratic inefficiencies, insufficient hospital empanelment, and high rejection rates for claims. AAP argues that many hospitals under the scheme are often under-resourced and incapable of handling the volume of patients, ultimately leaving beneficiaries with out-of-pocket expenses despite the promised coverage. In response, AAP has called for the nationwide adoption of a more comprehensive healthcare system, citing its own flagship Mohalla Clinics in Delhi as a successful model. These neighborhood clinics offer free consultations, medicines, and basic diagnostic services to local residents, showcasing an alternative to Ayushman Bharat’s model by prioritizing accessibility and quality.

To further highlight this contrast, AAP has urged the central government to consider replicating Delhi’s model across the country. Party leaders claim that by establishing localized healthcare centers and removing insurance intermediaries, the government can directly reach the underserved communities, ensure better accountability, and reduce healthcare inequities. They argue that only a ground-level healthcare model like Mohalla Clinics can provide affordable and reliable healthcare access to all. As AAP continues its campaign, it calls for a review of Ayushman Bharat and pushes for healthcare reform to ensure every Indian has access to essential medical services.
