OBC leader Nayab Singh Saini has been named by the ruling party to succeed Manohar Lal Khattar, who served as chief minister for more than nine years. This is an effort to unite the state’s non-Jat voters and overcome anti-incumbency sentiment.
In addition to bestowing the Bharat Ratna to former Bihar Chief Minister and OBC icon Karpoori Thakur, the party’s recent appointment of Mohan Yadav as Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister is indicative of its outreach to the OBC group.

The BJP is hopeful that rejigging in the Uttarakhand pattern would pay well in Haryana. The party nominated Tirath Singh Rawat to succeed Trivendra Singh Rawat as the chief minister of the hill state in March 2021; Tirath later gave way to Pushkar Singh Dhami. Since the BJP won the 2022 Assembly elections, the experiment was successful. Gujarat also had experienced success with this approach.
The party is now relying on a younger leadership in Haryana to stave off challenges from the Indian National Lok Dal, the Congress, and the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP). The BJP and JJP broke as a result of their inability to reach an agreement on seat-sharing for the Lok Sabha elections, coinciding with the changing of the guard.

The BJP MP Brijendra Singh’s switch to the Congress side has also led the saffron party to restructure its state apparatus. Madhya Pradesh was held by the BJP late last year in spite of internal strife and anti-incumbency sentiment. Whether the state leadership and the party high command can accomplish the same in Haryana is yet to be seen.
