Sindhu caught up with Blichfeldt, levelling the first game at 6-all before taking the initiative and going into the lead. Blichfeldt trailed Sindhu until 14-15 before the world No. 11 won the first game with six straight points.
Blichfeldt, who finished second at the Swiss Open on Sunday, took a 12-6 lead in the second game. But Sindhu fought back to tie the game at 17 all. With her momentum, Sindhu won the next four points to advance to the semi-finals.
The second-seeded Indian will next face Singaporean Yeo Jia Min, against whom she has an unblemished record, having never lost a game in their previous three meetings.
Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist, has withdrawn from competition after winning gold at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham last year. Sindhu returned to the circuit in January after her stress fracture healed, but she lost her first three individual tournaments of the year – the Malaysia Open, India Open, and All England Open – in the first round.
She won the first round of the Swiss Open in Basel as the defending champion last week, but lost in Round 2. Sindhu is competing in her first semi-final since winning gold at the Commonwealth Games last year.
Earlier in the day, Kidambi Srikanth lost to Japanese top seed Kenta Nishimoto in the men’s singles quarterfinals. In 41 minutes, the fifth-seeded former world number one lost 18-21, 15-21. This was Srikanth’s third defeat in eight meetings with the world No. 15.
