    Hindustan Aeronautics Limited has licensed-built as many as 222 of the 272 Su-30-MKI aircraft ordered from Russia since the 1990s. The 12 new aircraft are intended to make up for the shortage brought on by crashes.
    India has been expanding its import base as it works to implement its ambitious Make in India objectives. It seems to wish to rely on no one country in particular. A major challenge still lies in closing the technology gap with China, which is more well-armed. 
    India believes there is room for more US-Indian cooperation in this area. The Sukhoi agreement will be closely watched in Washington following the sanctions relief for India’s acquisition of Russian S-400 air defense systems.

    The US law that permits penalties against nations that purchase significant amounts of defense equipment from Russia will be put to the test once more. Now, no nation can impose its will. The Defence Acquisition Council has also approved the procurement of essential military equipment from Indian suppliers.
