Indian football team captain Sunil Chhetri has announced his retirement from international football. The 36-year-old footballer made the announcement through his Twitter account on 15th September 2021.

Chhetri is considered one of the greatest football players that India has produced. He made his debut for the national team back in 2005, and ever since then, he has been the face of Indian football. Chhetri is the second-highest active goal-scorer in international football, with 74 goals in 117 appearances.

In his statement, Chhetri mentioned that it was a tough decision for him to make, but he thinks it is the right time for him to retire from the international team. He thanked his teammates, coaches, and everyone who supported him during his tenure as an international footballer.
Chhetri is also the captain of Indian Super League (ISL) side Bengaluru FC. He has won several awards and accolades in his career, including the Arjuna Award, the Padma Shri, and the prestigious Indian Footballer of The Year award multiple times.
The Indian football fraternity took to social media to bid a farewell to the legendary striker. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) President Praful Patel hailed Chhetri as “a true role model” and said that he has raised the bar for football in India.
Chhetri’s retirement will leave a huge void in the Indian football team. However, his contributions to the sport will always be remembered, and he will remain an inspiration for many aspiring footballers in India and around the world
