Justice RM Lodha of the Supreme Court compared the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to a caged parrot that mimics its master’s voice in 2013, during the UPA’s rule. It was a revealing statement about the corruption culture that has crept into all governmental levels as well as the mishandling of investigation agencies.

A year later, the threat of a crackdown helped the BJP win power. It is now accused of enlisting the help of the corrupt and launching probes by investigative authorities against individuals who do not want to join the ruling party.

Regardless of the suspects’ loyalty, the government is looking into claims of corruption or fraud, the BJP has stated. The BJP has consistently claimed that it is targeting its political enemies.

Fingers are being pointed at the political weaponization of the agencies as one opposition leader after another comes under pressure from the ED and CBI. The fact that opposition party leaders are the target of 95% of the cases under investigation supports the claims of partisanship and bias.

The purpose of probe agencies is to gain credibility by remaining impartial and unaffected by political interference. They need to be viewed as objective in a divisive political environment. The picture that reality paints is rather different. It is no one’s business to support corruption; hold the corrupt accountable without fail. It’s a selected action that weakens the opposition and creates a shadow that can turn suspects into victims.
