A key finding of the study is how well undernutrition, a recognised major risk factor for TB, may be addressed: Giving patients weekly supply of a 10-kg food basket containing rice, pulses, milk powder, oil, and multivitamins can lower the prevalence of all TB by 40% and the incidence of infectious lung TB by 50% among those in touch with the victims during a six-month period. To prevent illness, the family members require 1.5 kg of pulses and 5 kg of rice per head every month.

Therefore, nutritional assistance must be added to clinical care for better treatment results, which would then help India’s ambitious objective to mostly eradicate TB and TB death by 2025. In light of the fact that, according to the WHO Report-2022, India accounts for 27% of TB incidence and 35% of TB fatalities globally, an all-out effort is required to reach this goal.

The National TB Prevalence Survey 2019u201321 has found that the tuberculosis burden in India is 1.6 times more than previously thought, which calls for increased efforts in light of this worrying trend as well. Since 64% of the population with symptoms did not seek medical attention because they chose to ignore them or did not recognise them as signs of TB, it would be better to eradicate the disease by providing wholesome dietary rations to all underprivileged sections and lowering their susceptibility to it.
