Tamil Nadu has decided not to implement the PM Vishwakarma Scheme in its current form, primarily due to concerns about its caste-based approach. The state government, led by Chief Minister MK Stalin, has raised objections over the scheme’s structure, which they argue may perpetuate caste-based vocations. Instead, Tamil Nadu aims to develop a more inclusive program that prioritizes social justice for all artisans, irrespective of their caste or family occupation.

In a letter to the Union Minister for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises, Stalin emphasized the need for modifications to the scheme. The state is advocating for a revised version that eliminates caste distinctions and focuses on equal opportunities for artisans. A committee has been set up to review the scheme and propose changes, including removing the mandatory family trade requirement and revising age criteria. Tamil Nadu also plans to provide additional support, including comprehensive training and a fair verification process for artisans in rural areas

This approach reflects the state’s commitment to fostering an inclusive, non-discriminatory environment for its artisans, while addressing criticisms of the existing national framework.
