Few had previously questioned whether India should follow England’s lead, but the BCCI had always dismissed the idea of split captaincy. However, according to reports, the new selection committee will be tasked with selecting captains for three different formats.
The BCCI fired the entire Chetan Sharma-led National Selection Committee on Friday in the aftermath of India’s T20 World Cup semi-final loss to England. The BCCI has already issued a call for new applicants for the position, with the deadline for submissions set for November 28.
The qualification criteria for the positions remain unchanged. Should have played at least 7 Tests or 30 First Class matches, or 10 ODIs and 20 First Class matches, according to the official BCCI statement.
Should have retired from the game at least 5 years ago, and no person who has served on any Cricket Committee (as defined in the BCCI’s rules and regulations) for a total of 5 years shall be eligible to serve on the Men’s Selection Committee.
According to PTI, their first instruction would be to select captains for all three formats. This could imply that Rohit Sharma will retain his ODI and Test captaincy, while Hardik Pandya will be considered as a T20I captain until the 2024 T20 World Cup in the United States and the West Indies.
The report also states that the chairman of selectors will be required to address the media regarding team-related issues.
